Dahlsens began in 1862 when Danish immigrant John Christian Dahlsen settled in Bairnsdale. A lucky gold find likely led to the beginnings of the timber yard and hardware business. J C Dahlsen’s strong belief in the East Gippsland region’s future drove pursuits including timber merchandising, saw milling, a half a century of shipping, fishing, contract home building and a 2 acre department store.

Today, Dahlsens celebrates an incredible 140 years of being proudly family owned and operated. Whilst remaining passionately active across Gippsland, the network has expanded to 25 Dahlsens trade and manufacturing sites across Victoria and southern New South Wales, 3 of which trade as Dahlsens Mitre10. In addition, Dahlsens wholly-own another 27 sites in its subsidiaries in Sydney (Midcoast Timber), Far North Queensland (Cairns Hardware) and the Northern Territory (Nortruss).

Dahlsens is set to continue its stronghold as one of Australia’s largest independently owned hardware retailers with a commitment to continually provide choice in the building and home renovation market.
